About Endlessness producers Pernilla Sandström and Johan Carlsson accepted the Silver Lion at the Venice Film festival.

Director Roy Andersson's new film About Endlessness has been awarded the Silver Lion för Best Director at the 76th Venice International Film Festival.

About Endlessness, the new film by Swedish director Roy Andersson, had its world premiere in competition at the Venice International Film Festival. Tonight it was awarded the Silver Lion for Best Director.

– This is amazing. Coming back to Venice to show this film has been a great honour, and to receive this award is an acklowledgment that we have created a film that connects to people. It gives me great joy and inspires me to keep on working, says Roy Andersson.

This is the second win for Andersson in Venice. At the 2014 festival his previous film, A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence, was awarded the Golden Lion.

About Endlessness will have its North American premiere next week at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it will screen in the Masters section.

With About Endlessness Roy Andersson adds to his cinematic oeuvre with a reflection on human life in all its beauty and cruelty, its splendour and banality. We wander, dreamlike, gently guided by our Scheherezade-esque narrator. Inconsequential moments take on the same significance as historical events: a couple floats over a war-torn Cologne; on the way to a birthday party, a father stops to tie his daughter’s shoelaces in the pouring rain; teenage girls dance outside a cafe; a defeated army marches to a prisoner of war camp.

– I want to emphasize the beauty of being a human, of being alive, and in order to show that you need to have a contrast, to also show the ugly side. This film is about the endlessness of the signs of existence, the director has stated.

Although recognized already in 1970 with his debut feature, Berlin winner A Swedish Love Story, Roy Andersson has made only six feature films, including About Endlessness. His other films are Giliap (1975), Songs from the Second Floor (2000) which won the Jury Prize in Cannes, You, the Living (2007) and European Film Award winner A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence (2014). The latter three films constitutes the "Living" trilogy. Between 1975 and 2000 Andersson took a long break and made a number of award-winning shorts, as well as several memorable commercials.

About Endlessness was produced by Pernilla Sandström and Johan Carlsson, Roy Andersson Filmproduktion AB in co-production with 4 ½ Fiksjon AS, Essential Films, Parisienne de Production, Sveriges Television AB, Arte France Cinéma, ZDF/Arte and Film Capital Stockholm. The film has received financial support by The Swedish Film Institute, film commissioner Baker Karim, and by Eurimages Council of Europe, Nordic Film and TV Fund, The Norwegian Film Fund, Film- und Medienstiftung NRW and Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg.
